お知らせ

9月、カナダのサスカチュワン大学の講師をお迎えして、英語で教授法を学ぶFD研修を教職員や大学院生向けに実施しました。タイ人留学生のRittさんも参加し、感想を共有してくれました。

In September, we invited a lecturer from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and conducted a faculty development (FD) training to learn teaching methods in English, aimed at faculty staff and graduate students. Mr. Ritt, a Thai international student, also participated and shared his thoughts.

Short-Term Faculty Development Training at Iwate University

Iwate University recently hosted an engaging four-day Faculty Development (FD) training program from September 24 to 27, 2024. Aimed at faculty, staff, and graduate students, the program was guided by Ms. Aditi Garg from the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching and Learning at the University of Saskatchewan. The sessions were thoughtfully designed to enhance teaching skills and promote learner wellbeing. Here are some insights I gained from attending several sessions.

We kicked off with the "Prioritizing Wellbeing" session on the first day. The training began with a strong focus on wellbeing, starting with "Educator Wellbeing." This session encouraged us to reflect on our expectations for ourselves and others, which helped establish workshop norms. We identified strategies to improve our well-being and created personalized plans for achieving a healthy work-life balance. This foundational session set a positive tone for the program, highlighting the importance of understanding our roles in supporting overall well-being.

In the afternoon, our attention turned to "Learner Wellbeing." I was impressed by how passionately participants talked about the importance of supporting student mental health. We looked at different ways to create a nurturing educational environment, considering factors like student purpose, experience, and the importance of feedback.

The day ended with a session on "Strategies for Large Classes." We explored effective teaching methods for larger classrooms, focusing on how to engage students and manage the class. We also learned that knowing how to use available classroom technology is important for creating the best learning experiences.

Day 2 of the training focused on effective group work. We learned how to plan and organize group activities to enhance collaboration, emphasizing the importance of clear guidelines and roles. Techniques such as SCALE (Schedule, Consensus, Attention, Leadership, Engagement) were introduced, along with an overview of methods for selecting group members. We also developed fair assessment criteria and feedback mechanisms to improve the learning process.

On Day 3, we concentrated on experiential learning and feedback. We examined its principles and created activities aimed at enhancing student engagement. The significance of feedback was highlighted, and we learned various tools for providing feedback, including "3 Stars and a Wish," "I Notice-I Wonder," "Red-Yellow-Green," "Rose-Bud-Thorn," and "3A+1." We also practiced self-reflection techniques to improve teaching effectiveness and plan for ongoing professional development. In the final session, we engaged in the YES-NO Line activity to facilitate deeper reflection, during which we discussed the characteristics of effective reflection.

On the final day, we expressed our teaching philosophies and identified habits that promote effective teaching. We learned about the BOPPPS model for lesson plan design to enhance active learning. The training concluded with participants delivering micro-lessons to peers and receiving constructive feedback to refine their techniques.

Although I could not attend all the sessions, the ones I participated in were both interesting and beneficial for current and aspiring educators. Overall, the FD training at Iwate University provided valuable opportunities for professional growth, fostering a collaborative spirit among participants. It was a valuable experience that equipped educators with essential tools to enhance our teaching effectiveness and support the success of Iwate University students.
